Tomorrow's Good Friday!

Tomorrow’s Good Friday

It’s not easy being a New Covenant Christian. No physical temple, no Holy of Holies, no seeable sacrifices. Good Friday reminds us that we weren’t eyewitnesses to the crucifixion. Sunday after Sunday with our ears we hear about the cross; but wouldn’t it  be better to have seen it with our eyes?

We don’t have a time-traveling Delorean to transport us to Golgotha; we have preaching. That’s right—preaching. Preaching pictures the cross. To put it pointedly, when we gather as a church and hear the gospel proclaimed, we witness Christ’s crucifixion. To the Galatian Church, who had never seen Christ, much less his crucifixion, Paul wrote, “It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified” (Gal. 3:1) .

Tomorrow we will experience Good Friday together. As Pastor Mark preaches, we, like the Galatians, can say, Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified before our very eyes.

Faith is “the conviction of things not seen”—at least by physical sight. May the Spirit of Christ by the proclamation of His word empower your redeemed imagination to paint a picture of the gospel more vivid than Rembrandt could render.
